ABSTRACT: A narrative case study constructed through a qualitative research methodology known as Immersion Journalism, examining the causes and effects of the recent increased migration as well as sojourn of African Americans to West Africa, particularly Ghana, one of the main West African points of departure for the transatlantic slave trade. Research identifies and records interviews with African-American expatriates while also presenting a reexamination of the history of Pan-Africanism, its relevance to the current migration of African Americans to Africa; forces contributing to their motivation, and revelations concerning their transition to living in West Africa. Final project will culminate in a published book, a series of literary nonfiction feature stories and various multimedia components with first-person reflections and observations by
John W. Fountain, a descendant of a man born an African-American slave.
